Credit for this goes to Frank, a.k.a. The Curator: "There is a gain range of 01-09 as well as a gain range of 0-500. Gain 01-09 disperses the field some and makes it a grainier reaction to the sound.. don't ask me why.. I don't know..it just does. :)"
Flo: Well, I tried both positive and negative gains and wide versus tall scopes. I can't detect any difference in graininess! Perhaps I don't have the right dimensions or the right sound files to show up this difference that Frank can see?
